104 – Trees Over Vancouver (New Gallery Addition)

A familiar vantage point for many.  Typically I do not take many pictures during daylight, however this one fits perfectly to bring out the texture within the trees in the foreground and to be able to see all the freighters lining up to come into the harbor.

Print limit: 10

104 - Trees Over Vancouver

Another Gallery Addition

I am very happy to announce the addition of another limited edition piece (6 prints total), Fire and Ice (103) to my gallery.  Fire and Ice was shot up toward Cypress Falls after a long cold snap through the Vancouver Area in early February, 2014.  With temperatures dipping down to -10, this allowed the majority of the waterfall to freeze.  The image was taken on the last day of the cold weather. Had I waited one more day, everything would have been melted due to the heavy warms rains that settled in.

The hike to get to the location was a little treacherous.  The trail was not heavily traveled, very narrow and with a very significant drop off to one side.  Carrying all my camera gear and tripod made things a little trickier balance wise.  Normally, I am able to jam my tripod into the ground when I require stability, however due to the ground being completely frozen, my tripod would only bounce and slide off the surface.  Again, not making it great for traveling on.

When we reached the shooting location, I was expecting a nice big flat platform with wire fencing. This could not have been further from what I was expecting.  I did not expect a slightly sloped 5 foot by 6 foot area with a drop off on all sides except the side we came down.  This would make for a little more of an unnerving shoot.  The sun created an amazing display of warm lighting, bringing out a little bit of light in the icicles on the left side.  Below the falls is a gathering of ice (not foam), which had started to gather as the ice fell over the falls.

(101) – Lone Juniper Sunset

I am happy to welcome a new addition to the gallery, which is now posted in my Gallery under “Sunrise & Sunsets” (http://www.michaeliwasaki.com/galleries/sunsets/#.UvkU4rRDfOM).

Shot from West Vancouver, the fine art image was captured in early February toward the end of an arctic front leaving and a pacific front coming in which you can see by the clouds. Wind gusts started to kick up with gusts upward of 30km/hr and below freezing temperatures.  The lone Juniper jets out from the rocks looking off to the amazing sunset from West Vancouver.

This fine art photographic print, limited to 15 prints (+2 artist proofs), and printed on aluminum framed in an Italian made olive tree veneer.

Edition is signed, numbered and includes a stamped certificate of authenticity.

Price: $7,500.

Michael Iwasaki Fine Art Photography – Images Book

Very excited to have my book arrive today, the place where I get all of my equipment (http://www.photoexpert.com) and printing of my book did (as usual), an AMAZING job! Thanks Brad and everyone there!  If you are looking for equipment, not only do they have AMAZING prices, however they also have the BEST customer service and friendly staff, bar none!  And I also love their “online catalog shopping”.  For me being in Canada, it is a much more economical method than Adorama, Broadway or B&H…

Unfortunately, my books will not be sticking around long, as they are all slated for Gallery homes…

86 Sailing – A View From Above

An image I shot from a doors off helicopter off the West Coast of Maui.  The image captures perfectly, the turquoise clear blue waters and the lone catamaran sailing off into the distance.  This was the second of two helicopter tours over a couple of the local islands on my hunt for waterfalls and amazing landscape opportunities.  This and a few other images have been added to my online gallery HERE.

Evening Panorama Fade

The following image is one that I have run through my mind many a time.  Albeit a rush job, this is a sample image that I wanted to try to see if I could pull it off.  It is a fading image from daytime into night time.  Well, that is the concept. There are many factors for the following image that I did not account for, like BIG FREIGHTERS turning, and moving right through my image.  The other point is I should have waited until complete darkness.  As a new father of two, I could barely hang on as late as I had already because I still had to get back home to cook dinner, so I left before it truly got dark.  That being said, I now know for next time.

You will see in the image, near day light on the right, with no lights on in the building.  As you start to look left through the city, the lights on the buildings become more prominent.    I spent VERY little time on this image, and also botched part of it.  Basically removed a few dust spots, and that was it.  Not much more.

North Shore Outlook Article – Thank You!

It was wonderful to see the article in The North Shore Outlook… (Thank you Michaela!).    The interview took place end of last week and I really did not know what to expect.  When I read the article, and saw the news, it was a pleasure to read and see.

Ice at Rice Lake

88 Rice Lake Ice - Michael Iwasaki Fine Art Photography

A place that is near by for a great hike, which can be humming in the peek of summer, yet completely dead in the middle of winter is Rice Lake in North Vancouver.

The drive up was a little iffy, as Capilano College was socked in, but by the time you drove down the drive toward the Seymour Demonstration forest and over the wonderful 42 speed bumps, or whatever it has to offer, it had completely cleared up.  I am guessing being that much further into the mountain and away from the inlet allowed for this.

I had stopped by the lake yesterday, which had a different look and feel as there was more mist and fog, which clearly was not the same for today.  Today, there was more ice (it was quite cold last night) and more sun and less fog.  I am typically not one to shoot in the middle of the day, however the colors that the sun brought out were quite satisfying, so I decided to go with an 11 x 36MP image pano on this image.
